In Spielberg's " Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind "
Steven's first choice for the lead was not Richard Dreyfuss , but Steve McQueen who met with Spielberg and took him to his first bar . And over a couple of beers they chatted about the movie . But McQueen had to turn down the part of Roy Neary because didn't think he could cry on camera.
Up on the South Dakota mountain road the people have gathered on the side of a hill while some inexplicable bond draws them together . There are hints of thunderstorms brewing out over the valleys below , electricity is in the air and there are "other" lights beginning to appear . There are visitors among us ...
An old man starts to whistle an old pioneer's song :
"They'll be comin' round the mountain when the come ....
they'll be comin' round the mountain when they come "
Across the globe half a world away , a mongolian trader out in the middle of the Gobi desert stands still quietly listening looking up over the dune ....then they discover a 1940's plane out in the middle of the sands.
In Darhmasala India a huge throng & gathering of crimson robed monks sit out in a valley chanting these tones repeatedly over and over completely absorbed , completely in awe . And when asked by the researchers where they first heard these tones , acting together as one unifyied singular body they all immediately point ....UP! Up into to the sky .... directly UP !
Back up on the country road on the hill in South Dakota , the people drawn there , have gathered to witness something they do not know .And out of the night sky, lights appear drawing closer swooping up on upon them with a rush .A four year old boy plays out the same tones that the monks chanted in India, on a toy xylophone .There are fast moving lights coming out of the rolling clouds , rushing towards the country home . The mother in alarm frantically locks the doors, while the lights now near hover outside upon them. There are tremblings outside and lights .
The little boy says:
"You can come in and play now , come in thru the door "
The record player inexplicably turns on there is Johnny Mathis singin "Chances Are"....the house begins to shake down to its floor boards , they are in the cellar , they are outside , they are on the roof . The front door which had been lock thrusts open ,barry the four year old is drawn outside towards the pretty light , and then the mother is too late. As soon as it begins it ends and the clouds draw away as fast as they came taking the lights with them . The mother rushes outside to see here child gone . She cries out as she falls to the ground hopelessly :
"BARRY !...BARRY !" .
But little boy is gone ....
