How much Aurora will receive from taxes collected on the sale of marijuana will depend on how the city decides to regulate the retailers, the Aurora Sentinel reports.

The Aurora City Council's Amendment 64 Policy Committee will decide next month if marijuana retailers should be temporarily banned to allow more time to come up with regulations. Colorado voters in November approved Amendment 64, which allows for the legal possession of small amounts of marijuana by adults. Local governments have the choice of deciding how to regulate the businesses.

Aurora could regulate marijuana retailers like liquor stores, which are required to be about 2,000 feet apart from any rival. That would give Aurora room for about 80 pot shops, and generate an estimated $2.5 million a year in sales tax revenues.

If the city follows the regulations for pawn shops and puts marijuana retailers two miles away from each other, Aurora would have 17 pot shops and an estimated $912,000 in sales tax revenues annually. But if Aurora limits marijuana retailers to industrial areas, the city would have room for six and those shops would generate about $322,000 for the city annually.
