That backup battery is only there if it gets accidentally unplugged or if there is a power failure for a few hours. It has an 8 hour life span. It is not a backup for internet service - it is a backup for phone service:

In case your ONT Power Supply Unit is accidentally unplugged - or in the event of a commercial power failure - a BBU is installed to provide you with backup power for standard voice service (but not Voice-Over-IP services) for approximately eight hours.
