1) Currently (using your example) the MMs HIGHEST Selling Price
is $0.008.
2) YOU, using your Broker(age) as we all do, place a SELL Order
at $0.0078. The MMs then drop-down from $0.008 to $0.078 because
your SELL Order is the "highest" SELL Order on the BID (Sell) side.
3) That is, the $0.008 that the MMs initially were displaying
WAS their "highest" Selling-Price -- using THEIR OWN INVENTORY.
(MMs always keep SOME "inventory" of Shares available for BUY or SELL.)
4) At the moment when your example occurred, YOUR SELL ORDER
was the "highest" SELL Order at the moment. (There may have been
additional, other SELL Orders at even "lower" Prices, but we
don't really KNOW that.)
5) SO...To execute your SELL Order, the MMs "dropped down" to
your stated LIMIT-ORDER (SELL Order) of $0.0078.
6) Following completion of your SELL Order, the MMs then
moved back "up" to $0.008. Who can blame them? After all, THEY
(the MMs) wanted TO ACQUIRE MORE SHARES FOR THEIR PERSONAL
INVENTORIES, and THE BEST WAY to do that was to "offer" the
HIGHEST SELL PRICE that they could, so-as to entice Shareholders
to SELL (to THEM).
I hope this clarifies the often obtuse, obscure, and sometimes
obscene machinations and manoeuverings of the MMs on "Level2."
