looking 4 a win. Like you said, the spread is the difference between the Bid/Ask. The greater the spread the harder it is to get out with a gain. Typically when there is a huge spread that signifies little Bid support on that particular stock. Many times you will see some Pennies being pumped on the boards and might be up 500% at 009. BUT, when you look at the B/A it is 002 by 009 which shows little bid support and a tough time for anyone to get out. You typically see this huge spread in Plays with low volume. Hope this helps.
