Another thing to understand about disruptive technology is that it represents CHANGE. And people are naturally resistant to change. It also usually represents replacing something people already have.

The first time Henry Ford demonstrated a working Model T, the next day people weren't rushing out to buy them. First they had to go and sell their horse. And maybe they had a bunch of hay they wanted to use up before they sold the horse. But of course eventually everyone wanted a car for transportation instead of a horse and Henry Ford became a very wealthy man. Those who invested in him most likely also became very wealthy. Those who didn't have the patience to hang with him probably were kicking themselves later.
