I'm hard pressed to even go so far as calling cancer "opportunistic" in the way that a virus is opportunistic, exploiting cellular mechanisms to hijack genetic framework for its own replication. Many cancers are directly caused by the opportunism of viral replication since some viruses cause permanent changes to intracellular mechanics, including growth regulators. Like I said, labeling cancer any one thing requires overlooking the great variations and the many cancers that do not operate in that way.

Causes of cancer: preexisting genetic condition-inherited traits, chemical-smoke and smoke carcinogenics, viral residual matter-some prostate and cervical hosted viruses, UV and other radiations-modification of genetic material due to radiation exposure.

In none of the cases above is cancer the active disease, but rather the passive result of some other activity or condition.
