We need the space programs for more than mere curiosity, our very survival may be at stake, as was recently eveidenced by the close-passage of an asteroid half the size of a football field. This object came VERY-close in astronomical distances, but easily clear of the planet Earth. The meteor that may originally been part of that asteroid at one time, did not miss, and caused considerable damage when it exploded in mid-air over Russia.
