Dell Profits Fall on Charge

Rollins acknowledged that Dell, in response to customer demand, had begun selling processors from Advanced Micro Devices, a chief rival of chipmaker Intel Corp. Dell has long relied exclusively on Intel chips, and Rollins gave no indication that the company would be rolling out AMD-equipped systems anytime soon.

I doubt that there is customer demand for Dell selling some boxed AMD parts (that you can buy everywhere else on the internet and at local DIY stores) - and nothing else. I don´t doubt however that there is customer demand for AMD based gaming systems, Opteron-based servers, Turion notebooks, A64 desktops from Dell. But that demand does not matter, obviously. Silly stuff.

More here:

Rollins said there has been no change in the company's position as an "all-Intel" supplier despite the company now offering packaged PC processors from Advanced Micro Devices Inc. on its website.

"We offering AMD products on the software and peripherals site for customers who want to buy them, but that's really the extent of it at this point," he said. "We look at opportunities all the time with technology, but this is a product customers wanted to buy on the software and peripherals site."
