On Friday from 5:00 am until 6:45 pm, WKCR will honor the work of the late trumpeter Donald Byrd. Byrd adopted the hard bop idiom early in his career and played as a sideman with many well known jazz musicians including John Coltrane, Art Blakey, and Jackie McLean. As a leader, he recorded many collaborations with baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams and saxophonist Gigi Gryce, particularly on the Blue Note Label.
