The consequences of an ossified, opaque FDA are changing. They used to be able to tightly control what drugs reached patients. Now, web-based distributors are bringing cheap, unregulated drugs to US consumers.

By imposing regulations that stifle conventional drug development, the FDA increases the likelihood that money will flow to these schemes outside the legal framework but beyond the reach of the law.

Rather than ensuring that people only have access to safe and tested drugs, they are creating conditions favorable to the emergence of drug production under conditions where neither the health of the user, nor the IP of the developer are protected.
