Gold medal winner Michael Phelps reportedly drank Carnation Instant Breakfast between Olympic swimming events. And, numerous studies have suggested that lowfat milk is an excellent post-exercise drink to maximize hydration and muscle recovery. Phase III Recovery drink has taken this research one step further, developing a milk-based recovery drink.

Every post-exercise drink should aim to rehydrate, replenish and rebuild. Rehydration is essential to maintain the body’s function and get it ready for subsequent exercise. Lowfat milk and lowfat chocolate milk have been shown to be more effective post-exercise than water or most sports drinks. Phase III Recovery starts with 1% fat milk. It then filters the milk to reduce the lactose and concentrate the natural proteins found in milk. Each 14.5 ounce bottle contains 35 grams of protein and 9 grams of lactose, which should be low enough to be tolerated by most people with lactose intolerance.

Research has shown that protein buildup seems to hit a ceiling if a meal or snack exceeds 30 grams of protein. Eating more protein than that at one time is simply stored as fat and not used to make muscle. The protein in Phase III Recovery is only slightly above this suggested ceiling. In addition, studies have shown that combining carbohydrate with protein post-exercise increases performance, helps restore muscle glycogen and reduces fatigue. Phase III Recovery has a 1 to 1 protein to carb ratio.

It is available in both vanilla and chocolate flavors. The vanilla has an intense sweet vanilla flavor. The chocolate was more mellow and similar to chocolate milk. The product carries the Real Milk Seal and has been approved for use by the US Olympic Snowboarding team. A 14.5 ounce bottle of vanilla has 320 calories, 900 milligrams of calcium, 340 milligrams of potassium and 125 milligrams of sodium; chocolate has 330 calories, 800 milligrams of calcium, 500 milligrams of potassium and 120 milligrams of sodium. Both are kosher certified.
