I believe the chopping of the feed stock is a pre KDS function. From my research, it turns out that the KDS doesn't handle long stringy things very well.

Anybody who has had the opportunity to clean the hair and strings out of the beater bar on their vacuum cleaner knows what happens to stringy things and rotating equipment.

We see the same thing with wood waste processing. To take it to extremes, the KDS would choke on feeding a full grown tree into it. However, if it runs through a chipper first, the KDS can make powder out of the largest tree.

Therefore, the KDS feed stock must be chopped into manageable pieces. So it looks like our scientific boys are trying to determine what is the optimal method of chopping grass/straw.
