Well, someone was buying the shares sold short. So there were buyers for those 48,650.
The rest of shares is straight forward... every sold share has a buyer so they are equal. The reason the stock is down is because there is more selling pressure.

But I don't think this number (48,650) tells the whole story anyway and shouldn't be looked at seriously. I mean, this could have been a 4,865 short block sold and covered 10 times. You know what I mean?
