And it seems that her nine year old sister Mary knew the kidnapper all along!

There are good reasons why Richard Ricci is the top potential suspect in Elizabeth's kidnapping. He stole from our home (and others), lied to us and never came forward with satisfactory answers to questions about his car and the missing mileage put on his car. These are some of the reasons why we believe he may have had something to do with the kidnapping. There are, however, reasons to believe that he was not the person in the house. Richard Ricci had worked in the house for almost three months and the children knew Ricci. Although it was dark the night of the kidnapping, Mary Katherine has been a consistent eyewitness. She described a man about "the height of her brother Charles" who was about 5'8" (Ricci was over 6'). He was wearing light colored clothes and hat. She described hair on the back of his hands and saw his neck between his hairline and collar. His voice did seem familiar and he seemed familiar enough that she thought she had met him before, but couldn't place him. Based off the evidence law enforcement has, no charge was ever brought against Richard Ricci for possible involvement in the Elizabeth Smart case.
About the middle of October Mary Katherine came to her parent's room and said, "Dad, I think I know who it might be." She identified a man who had worked in the home for one day in November of 2001. Lois and some of the children had met him downtown as he was asking for spare change. He was clean, soft-spoken, well-groomed, Caucasian, 5'8" tall, dark hair, and about 45 years old. He called himself "Emmanuel", but it seemed clear that this was not his real name, but had something to do with his self proclaimed evangelical calling as a preacher to the homeless. He told Ed that he and his sister were staying with someone in the valley and that they were traveling to different cities preaching to homeless. He took a bus to a stop close to their home and then walked to the house. He worked for five hours, helping on the roof and raking leaves. Law enforcement has tried to locate him, for questioning, but has been unsuccessful. This Salt Lake Police composite drawing was made from Edward's recollection from the previous year. Edward Smart stated, "We are not saying this is the individual who kidnapped Elizabeth, however we encourage this individual, as we have all workers in the house, to come forward to be interviewed by law enforcement."
