I can't find a link but the Transcontinental Railway had much to do with the foundation of modern corporate law.

For give me, my memory is a bit hazy as to history..........

America was expanding faster than ships could bring new citizens from Europe, the expanse of new land, the gold rush, the opportunities were hope for a population after the Civil War.

The idea of 'Corporation' was extended to private ownership.
That is;
A Corporation was a collective of people in a modest rural/urban government.......
the concept was extended to include a financially motivated entity.
It allowed responsibility to be diverted from a single entity (person) to the collective.
This was crucial to the development of our American West and offered risk aversion to the builders of the Trans-Con American Rail.
Today our corporations divert personal responsibility to shareholders.
Corporations are fined and subject to restrictions yet the people who made bucks are left in power.
