I don't think O is especially left, basically pretty moderate, imho. Granted, the teabaggers don't see it that way (all they see is a black guy in the WH, lol).
I think O does value a "new deal" institution such as Fannie Mae, created in the 1930s, to help create a national mortgage market. Its worked well since then, although it seems Fannie takes some heavy losses about once every 20 years. 2004-2008 has been rough, but we are working through the bad mortgages, and will be moving on up someday soon.
I think FnF will do well in the next few quarters (I like the preferreds better though).
