One assumption is just as valid as the other. However, I feel that the significant growth in the short position over the past year supports my contention.

Further, your assumption that shorts have have made money while longs have not during a time when the share price has risen significantly makes no sense at all. Why would you assume that shorts have timed the STSI market perfectly during a year of rising prices, but at the same time assume that longs have not?
