N'Awlins is pretty safe if you stay in 'the Quarter' or downtown area. It is not a big 'downtown' so you are in walking distance of anything and everything Mardi Gras. There is always a big police presence so beyond finding a pick-pocket you are good. A lot of good motels and bed and breakfast places but book early (now) and be sure to check on secure motel parking if you are driving (cost extra).
Mardi Gras is a good time and usually not too rough...but there is a massive amount of alcohol to be had (and is had) but usually just good fun...

Probably a good idea to stay off the WestBank unless you know the area.
