Elmer, PPC history repeat with Hammer?

Not likely. It is an evolutionary growth path for x86, a well proven technology. Early indications are that 64-bit optimized for Hammer gets a 30% boost over 32-bit code. (That is more than I would have predicted.)

If you want to see a totally new architecture that doesn't live up to the foils, I think Intel has one...

Good thing they have HPQ locked in!

By the way - someone posted a list of the other companies developing Itanium 2 product. They are all a lot different than HPQ, because HPQ has committed all their major non-PC computer products to Itanium. They burned their bridges. The others adopting Itanium 2 have not boxed themselves in, they can offer a line of products. Should they not sell, it is not a big deal.

For HPQ, if Itanium 2 does not sell for them, it is death. They will make it work for their workstation, mainframe and non-stop markets.
