DARBES, considering how much the Q3 server market share growth was hyped up by analysts (and used against INTEL), 1.5% is hardly earth shaking, and shows that growth momentum has slowed considerably. Hopefully Galaxy etc. can help some this quarter, but I think it´s clear that AMD needs a lot more OEM support, especially from IBM (a server maker with a substantial x86 customer base), to make the Opteron market broader and much more competitive. But they will have stronger competition next year.

The analyst responsible for the Mercury Research numbers also said, wrt. overall market share, that, if you edited out the unusually high Xbox CPU shipments in Q2, overall market share hasn´t changed much (maybe by ~1%). So I have a hard time seeing AMD growing to a more reasonable size in the market, if even INTEL´s chipset shortages etc. weren´t enough for a more substantial gain. About 1% overall seems to be about it for AMD, once in a few years, if things go particularly well for them.

These numbers are always sobering. The pace is at best glacial.
