Major stockholders don't run the co., the appointed mgt. team run the company. The CEO and others don't necessarily hold a majority stake. With that being said, a person or persons who hold large amts. of stock are major stockholders. Carl Icahn holds major positions in cos. but does not run the cos.. Major stockholders combined have power in VOTING rights. Mgt. knows this and when pressured enough its in their best interest to listen to stockholders.
