In fact, that is not the case. If you are buying through a major broker your name is never seen my the company unless you request a Stock Certificate to be issued. Most people today keep the stock in their borker's account and all the company sees is the aggregate number of shares in the "Street Name" i.e. in the name of the brokage firm.
