I don't want to minimize the conspiracy theory but I do think the black box played a big role in this sense -- it raised the risk of ownership.
Ariad was cruising along and we were all trying to do revenue stream calculations. Then comes the black box and suddenly one can just hear the competition asking doctors if they really want to take these risks with their patients. Most doctors don't know or won't care about the FDA covering their asses argument.
The problem... our drug just got somewhat harder to sell.
Of course this is just speculation. Nobody has anyway of discerning the sellers' motives (short of an SEC investigation).
