It already has. Itanium 2 is used in systems by NEC, SGI, Unisys, Legend, and Bull. Dell, IBM, and Hitachi will introduce systems later this year, and Fujitsu will follow in 2004. Looking at the data, Itanium 2 is the processor supported by nearly every tier-1 and tier-2 vendor, while Opteron is the one that these OEMs are still "considering".

I think people are still justified in being skeptical of Itanium 2, but disregarding it as a strategic advantage for Intel would be a mistake, IMO.
