Companies that are too big to maintain growth give out after tax earnings to secure share holder's interest.

Most investors look for growing companies.
GE is just so damn big they don't have the growth potential as some start-up company.
Verizon is another.
Master Limited Partnerships (MLPs) get tax breaks and are forced to distribute to share holders.
