What opportunities are there for the majority of unskilled workers?



Your question answers itself....none.

Loans for education are available but there's that pesky diminishing returns problem:
If one does beg a loan and no job is available that loan follows with interest and no bankruptcy will stop the interest until one dies.



Perhaps a person who wants to go on to receive an advanced degree should do some serious soul searching before making the leap. Maybe they should consider whether the degree will be worth the cost?

On a side note, there is a movement afoot to allow anyone to take online college courses for full credit, free of charge. There's a refreshing change in the overly expensive higher education system!!!
