On April 6, 2010, at the New-York Historical Society's Global
Economic Panel, Volcker commented that the United States should
consider adding a national sales tax similar to the Value Added Tax
(VAT) imposed in European countries, stating "If, at the end of the
day, we need to raise taxes, we should raise taxes."[34]
