Flash memory in general and particularly NAND is a sucker's bet. It is in the end the "memory business" just like DRAM.

Intel continued in the Flash memory business because of its strategic interest in having flash memory always available for storing BIOS in PC's. In the early to mid 90s there were occasions when the lack of flash memory impeded the sale of PCs. Very not good for the sale of Intel processors.
