Lucent Technologies Completes Deployment of Macau Unicom's CDMA2000 1X Network; Milestone Represents China Unicom's First Major Step Toward Offering Mobile Services in International Markets and a New Market Win for Lucent

BEIJING--(BUSINESS WIRE)----Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) today announced it completed the deployment of a CDMA2000(R) 1X network for Macau Unicom, a subsidiary of China Unicom based in Macau. As part of this milestone - which represents China Unicom's first major step toward offering mobile services in international markets and a new market win for Lucent - China Unicom hosted a ceremony attended by Edmund Ho Hau Wah, chief executive of Macau's Special Administrative Region; Jiang Yao-Ping, vice minister of the Ministry of Information Industry for China; Chang Xiao-Bing, chairman and CEO of China Unicom, and executives from Lucent Technologies China.

As part of Macau Unicom's CDMA2000 1X network deployment, Lucent supplied its Compact 4.0 base stations and mobile switching center (MSC). Lucent Worldwide Services (LWS) provided network planning, integration and installation services. When the network is commercially launched, it will support high-quality voice, short message, packet data, wireless intelligent network, and international roaming services.

During the initial phases of the launch, Macau Unicom will focus on providing roaming services for China Unicom's subscribers, and will later introduce services for the local market. The network also will be used to provide voice and data services for the upcoming East Asia Games in Macau this month.

"We highly value the strategic partnership between Lucent and China Unicom," said Chen Wu, director and deputy general manager of Macau Unicom. "Lucent's cutting-edge products and services enable Macau Unicom to deliver high-quality voice and data services via CDMA2000 1X and the ability to support 1xEV-DO mobile high-speed data services with a simple upgrade. This deployment serves as a proving ground for China Unicom's venture into international markets."

"We have already established a strategic partnership with China Unicom, and have been actively involved in China Unicom's CDMA projects in 10 provinces. The Macau Unicom network deployment represents a new frontier for China Unicom and a new market win for Lucent," said Norman Lam, senior executive vice president of sales and marketing, Lucent Technologies China. "In Guangdong, Lucent has been awarded contracts by Guangdong Unicom in nine business areas. This allows us to leverage our local capabilities and experience to provide an efficient and reliable CDMA2000 network deployment in Macau."
