They weren't friends, they were an investment group interested in natural resources.

They were nowhere near as good a partner as the one Scott is working on as they weren't end users, did not have the really big capital needed to build the mine.

It certainly would have benefited me if they ended up with the opportunity and benefited them as we'll but they are just opportunistic money which is better than no money but there are better partners interested of which I assume Scott choose the best first.
