After pondering this piece, and some of the comments in the paragraphs around Supermarkets/RFID and scanning a cellphone over a product, etc, I thought you might find it interesting to take a look at Neomedia Technologies and their Paperclick Platform. They have numerous patents in many areas including RFID and GPS related Mobile navigatory areas.

There's a two-pronged approach to think about imho when looking at the new Virgin NYC Megastore interactive Kiosks.

1.) The use of the kiosks to scan barcodes of CDs, DVDs and games at the Virgin Megastore and get connected to the internet of a website to get more
information, song demos, etc. This is allowed only because of the patents owned by Neomedia Technologies, Inc. (www.neom.com) where Virgin use their
proprietary software called "Paperclick" (http://www.paperclick.com ) to access from the physical world to the internet by scanning the barcodes.
Other uses for physical world to internet connection include the use of voice, GPS, RFID and soon Image Recognition (via a buyout of Mobot's own
patents - still pending, see http://www.neom.com/press_releases/2005/20050801.jsp ). The use of kiosks is actually the more expensive proposition and usually out of reach for the average small business owner but I could envision these type of Kiosks spread out amongst any retail market in any type of distribution channel at retail, etc (for example). However if you look at Virgin's screen in the kiosk (see

screen of Virgin's kiosk. Also, see the resulting lawsuit between Neomedia and Virgin ( http://www.neom.com/press_releases/2005/20050629.jsp ) that
sealed the business agreement on using Paperclick.

2.) The second pronged strategy will be in fact gain greater grounds than the kiosk. It's the use of cell phones or PDAs to scan barcodes (e.g. take a
picture of a barcode) or images/logos and get connected to brand name's (eg. coca cola, nike, etc) or artist's band website. Trademarked names will be
the key to make advertising super easy and super cheap when it can reach the masses via cell phones or PDAs through Permission Based marketing.

As mentioned, Neomedia Technologies, Inc began earlier this week officially announcing ( http://www.neom.com/press_releases/2005/20050926.jsp ) the
Paperclick WordRegistry for mobile cell phones and PDAs which is much like registering domain names for the internet except this is for mobile phones
and PDAs. The name "Virgin," "Virgin Megastore," and "Virgin Digital" are already registered at the site. See the Keyword Registration site:

Think of using a cell phone or PDA as being the world smallest "kiosk" that you can carry around with you and use it anytime you want, say, by looking
at a CD, taking a picture of the barcode or even the image alone and get connected to CD's website for more info, song demo, prices and decide
whether you want to order it for delivery or simply have it downloaded to your cell phones, iPod or whatever for later listening.

Powerful stuff. If you can think it, they can link it via gps, rfid, or plain old barcode.
