actually MMs make money on the spread, they rarely ever hold shares long, and don't care what price they buy or sell at. When you see down ticking or bid up ticking, that is someone who has access to direct trading which allows people to select what MM they want, moving them to what ever price points they want...
If you see a lot of people stacking the ask, those are NOT the MM doing that on their own, but people using the MM to set it up like that
