Always been mysterious to me why everyone assumes ACE inhibitors and ARBs are virtually interchangeable though. ARBs increase levels of ANG II (and hence probably ANG IV)

Exactly. ARBs block ANG II from binding to the AT1 receptor but not to the AT2 receptor, which activates a somewhat different even opposite path. ACE inhibitors prevent the production of bioactive ANG II and hence inhibit its effects via both AT1 and AT2 pathways. This is why I told my dad to switch from his ACE inhibitor med to an ARB a couple of years ago.
