Michele B Kaufman, PharmD, B Pharm, RPh, is President and owner of PRN Communications Inc, a freelance medical writing/editing and clinical pharmacy/managed care consulting company in New York, NY. She is also Clinical Pharmacist at the New York Downtown Hospital, as well as an Adjunct Clinical Professor at Touro College of Pharmacy in New York, NY. Dr Kaufman is an active member of the New York City Society of Health-Systems Pharmacy, the New York Region Affiliate of the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy, and the Empire State-Metropolitan New York Chapter of the American Medical Writers Association. In 1986 she earned her BS in Pharmacy from the University of Rhode Island School of Pharmacy. In 1991 she earned her PharmD degree from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Sciences in Boston, MA. Dr Kaufman has worked as a product development pharmacist/scientist at Reed & Carnrick Pharmaceuticals in Piscataway, NJ and as a per-diem hospital pharmacist at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ . She has also worked as a Poison Information Specialist at the Massachusetts Poison Control System Children’s Hospital in Boston, MA. In 1992, she completed a Drug Information Fellowship at the URI Drug Information Center/Roger Williams Medical Center in Providence, RI, after which she served as Clinical Assistant Professor at St John’s University in Jamaica, NY and as Clinical Coordinator of Drug Information/Internal Medicine at Long Island Jewish Medical Center (LIJMC) in New Hyde Park, NY. Dr Kaufman left academia to be a Clinical Pharmacy Coordinator, then a Project Leader/Clinical Pharmacist and Geriatric Case Manager at HIP Health Plan of New York, NY (1996-2006). She was also the main preceptor and coordinator for the St John’s University College of Pharmacy PharmD program while at HIP. Prior to her role as Pharmacy Planner for PRIME®, she also served as a Medical Writer and Director of Quality. A prolific author, Dr Kaufman serves on the Editorial Board of the Formulary journal and is the researcher and writer of Drug Watch, a pharmaceutical pipeline column. She is also a regular contributor to Drug Topics, Dialysis & Transplantation, and The Rheumatologist, as well as a peer-reviewer for other medication and pharmacy journals. As a lead pharmacist planner for PRIME®'s CE activities, Dr. Kaufman ensures that the design of the organization's educational offerings meet the dynamic learning needs of pharmacists, and that content meets validity and integrity standards essential for the practice of pharmacy.
