As a boater, I can tell you that an automotive GPS will not work in non-land (highway based) applications. The best it would do is point you to the nearest highway.

I've tried to use one of our car GPS units in our boat, just doesn't work, thats why they make special application GPS units, with the proper maps/software installed.

With that said, Twin Air's planes are older piston-engine planes, I've seen some inside photos, it doesn't seem that their instrumentation and avionics have been updated over the years, so who knows. But they must have whats required by FAA for instrumentation to fly IFR, I'm sure they are not flying to the Bahama's VRF!
