So, long-term investors feel that opinions posted on internet message boards are what determines the success of the company and value of its stock? Like if they don't go around 'defending the company's honor', they will somehow fail to sell their products to people who don't even know or care if the message board exists?

Sounds more like people who like to dream about reward but can't deal with being reminded of the risk. Either that or folks whose reward is going to come from creating an illusion on a message board, rather than the company's actions.
