SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- U.S. natural-gas stocks rose by 53 billion cubic feet for the week ended Sept. 23, the Energy Department reported Thursday. Analysts at Platts expected a rise of 67 billion, but First Enercast Financial predicted an increase of 49 billion. Total stocks now stand at 2.885 trillion cubic feet, down 116 billion cubic feet from the year-ago level, and up 23 billion cubic feet from the five-year average, the government data said. November natural gas is up 25 cents, or 1.8%, at $14.35 per million British thermal units in New York, trading near the session's high.
