Susie: I disagree. I love candles and have them all over my house (not the tall skinny ones used on dining room tables). They create an inviting ambiance IMO. When I entertain, I light them all and there is very little need for artificial light. As long as you're present to watch for problems, they seem safe enough. A lot of my candles are in various types of glass holders. I also use a lot of votives. It is not a good idea to leave burning candles unattended.

But if you are a worrier, candles are probably not worth it.
