The Halfway House

I have always made sure that when I go into a place (especially a crowded one) that I can see at least 2 ways to get out.
My husband thinks I'm nuts but I don't care.
Whenever we stay at a hotel I do what he calls "the ritual".
As soon as I put my bags down, I walk out to the hall and count the number of doors to the nearest exit. If there's a smoky fire you won't be able to see so I will be able to touch my way to the exit.
I think from now on I will not only check to the nearest exit, but to all exits.
It's a sad day.
