There are currently three companies who have a patent on synthetically producing melatonin and if it continues to become popular, those three companies may find themselves competing with new producers of melatonin. Those original three companies don't want that to happen because it would be less money in their pocket so it would be in their best interest to have melatonin regulated and only available through prescription. That way, it would be hard for new producers to enter the market and the three who are already there would maximize profits.
