There has been a high volume of shorting action for a while now. There were some days back in the run up in June when something like 90% of the daily action was shorting, but percent of shares short was still between 2-3%. I am pretty new to this so I probably can't explain it as well, but my understanding is it could be MM's shorting to facilitate filling bids. I'm open to other information though if that is incorrect - I just don't see the sense in shorting a stock that is so cheap - anyone that shorted at the big run up to 1.25 would have been out long ago.
