USA looked like UBRA, United Banana Republics of America. I've thought for a while that we might be declining into something out of old movies. The US was always respected (if not always liked) in the rest of the world for economic, military, and technological power, competence, and efficiency. We were the good guys standing in the way of godless communists, and if nothing is ever that simple, there was a grain of truth in there. Today, our collection of enemies not least of which is Al Quada must be laughing their asses off. Rome might have looked like this 1800 years ago.

It is too easy to blame the bushites. Half the electorate voted for them. In a democracy the people get the leadership they deserve. As long as the people vote incompetents in office, there will be incompetents in office. IMO, the root cause of this SNAFU was politicising vital government functions as patronage "turkey farms" rather than going with trained and experienced professionals. Interesting to see if the voters pick up on this or it will just happen again and again. At least in the 21st century the bread and circuses are much more elaborate, more like burgers and wide screen HDTV. Pass the Soma, please.
