FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS FOR PATRIOT INVESTORS

1. What will happen to the Patriot common stock that I own? Will I receive any compensation if the stock is cancelled?
? At this time, we do not know what will happen to Patriot’s common stock as a result of the Chapter 11 reorganization. Typically, the common stock of a company in Chapter 11 is cancelled upon its emergence from the reorganization process and stockholders usually receive no value for any common stock they still hold at that time.

2. Will Patriot’s common stock stop publicly trading now that the Company has filed for Chapter 11 protection?
? Patriot’s stock is currently listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).
? However, it is likely that the Company’s common stock will be suspended from trading on the NYSE and eventually be delisted. If that were to occur, Patriot common stock might still be traded over the counter in the Pink Sheets or on the OTCBB. A delisting from the NYSE could result in significantly lower trading volumes and liquidity for investors seeking to buy or sell shares of the common stock.

3. Should I sell my Patriot common stock now?
? We are not in a position to offer investment advice.

4. Will you hold quarterly earnings reports and host investor conference calls?
? As part of the reorganization process we will be required to periodically disclose certain financial results.
? We will not issue earnings press releases or hold quarterly conference calls during the reorganization proceedings.
? We plan to continue to file quarterly and annual reports with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

5. How will the Chapter 11 filing affect the value of Patriot bonds?
? It is not possible to predict what value, if any, Patriot debt securities may ultimately have.

6. Will Patriot continue to make interest payments on bonds?
? We do not expect to pay interest on bonds or that interest will accrue on bonds during the Chapter 11 proceedings.

7. How long will Patriot be in Chapter 11?
? Chapter 11 cases typically last from 9 to 24 months, and sometimes longer. We intend to move through the reorganization process as quickly as possible.

8. When did Patriot become a public company?
? Patriot Coal became a public company on October 31, 2007 through a distribution of shares from Peabody Energy. Although a relatively new public company, Patriot has a long history of coal mining, with some mines beginning production over 40 years ago.

9. Has Patriot ever split its stock?
? Patriot completed a 2-for-1 stock split in August 2008.

10. Who can help me with lost stock certificates?
? Patriot’s stock transfer agent is American Stock Transfer and Trust Company, LLC (AST). Representatives from AST can help with lost stock certificates, transfer of stock to another person or additional services. AST can be reached at 800-937-5449 for residents in the U.S. or Canada or 1-718-921-8156 for residents outside the U.S. and Canada. You can also contact AST through its website, www.amstock.com.

11. How do I calculate my cost basis in Patriot stock?
? A method to allocate your tax basis between Peabody and Patriot can be found in this Tax Basis Letter. Note that this letter was prepared at the time of the spin-off and does not incorporate Patriot’s 2-for-1 stock split in August 2008. You should consult your tax advisor as to the tax consequences of the stock distribution under U.S. Federal, state, local and foreign tax laws
