Per an agreement reached between the two companies in October, Pacific Ethanol Inc., which operates a neighboring corn-based ethanol facility, is providing operational support at ZeaChem’s demo plant. Imbler said the assistance from Pacific Ethanol has been “phenomenal” for ZeaChem so far, as the company has contributed work force and operational capabilities to the project.

Another positive for the industry — and for Pacific Ethanol in particular — is California’s low-carbon fuel standard. The groundbreaking standard was back on track last month after the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals granted the California Air Resources Board’s motion to stay the injunction that has prevented CARB from enforcing the standard since last December.

Although the case is ongoing, CARB is allowed to continue implementation and enforcement of the standard, which by 2020 reduces the carbon intensity of gasoline and diesel fuels by 10 percent.

That’s a key to Pacific Ethanol’s business model. The company says it produces the lowest-carbon ethanol in the nation because its plants are close to customers and it uses less energy because it does not dry its distillers’ grain, a by-product that is used for animal feed.
