Ya aren't supposed to set th' cruise-control on motorcycles,...and stand on the seat, either... But I have.

LOL, I was less than impressed with the "smoker-boxes" they sell, to put wood chips into. Not only do they provide very little smoke, they can block/absorb the heat from the grill.
Chips directly in the grill don't hurt anything, but the ash needs to be cleaned/removed occasionally.
The biggest No-No for chips, is do not place them directly under the food during cooking...they would absorb oils, and flame like a candle-wick. I use mesquite, get it at walmart...they sell smaller-chips that easily fall thru the grill-grating. (Most of 'em, anyway) It's all personal-preference as to what type of wood, I prefer apple-wood or mesquite, some like hicory.
