Democrat Michael Coleman is among mayors across the U.S. pushing for the federal government to pass more stringent regulations on emissions of mercury and other airborne toxins.
Coleman is mayor of Columbus. He was among 90 mayors of cities and towns to sign a letter to EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson this week expressing support for proposed regulations on toxic emissions.
The stalled rules were first proposed in 1990. Affected emissions come primarily from coal- and oil-fired power plants.
Leaders of the seven largest American cities were among those who signed the letter.
It's estimated that as many as 1 in 6 women of child-bearing age has enough mercury in her bloodstream to harm a developing baby. All 50 states now warn against eating certain fish due to mercury contamination.
