Tim Fu, president of Taiwan-based Professional Computer Technology (PCT), the largest distributor for US-based Silicon Storage Technology (SST), recently confirmed that PCT has raised NOR flash prices 10-25% and there is room for further price increases.

Prices for mainstream 4Mbit NOR flash chips have dropped from US$0.7 in May 2004 to US$0.4 last quarter, Fu said. Also, supply for the segment has recently started to run tight, as makers have nearly cleared out their inventory and the hot season is approaching. In fact, supply for 8Mbit parts has also started to lag demand, he added

Overall, the price increase range for NOR flash parts now is around 10-25%, with prices for 4Mbit parts already exceeding US$0.5, Fu said.

Fu added that even if makers ramp up new capacity in the near future, he does not think NOR flash prices will decline, he added.
