Good for your dad, but value is in the eye of the beholder if there is not a market (public or private) the price is open to manipulation, specifically inflated value. His "enormous value" may just be just ok value. Further, if there is no liquidly what good is the value if you can never use it?

Public markets may have issues, but they help determine the true value of companies.
