A&E Working On (Another) Marijuana Reality Show

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Buoyed by the success of Discovery’s Weed Wars and National Geographic’s American Weed (which premiered this week), A&E has begun filming an 8-episode reality-based television show with a focus on horticulture. A&E’s show, unlike its dispensary-focused predecessors, will primarily highlight medical patients with severe health issues, as it follows around Bret Bogue, a “world renowned medical cannabis cultivator” from Apothecary Genetics.

What A&E must hope sets it apart from other marijuana based reality shows is that the protagonist of their show is himself a legitimate medical marijuana patient who suffers from melanoma–and a well-known grower. Additionally, based on this press release, the focus of A&E’s show (no title yet), is based on this While the merits and

Being a critical cancer patient himself, Mr. Bogue was diagnosed with a very rare form of melanoma in 1995. Mr. Bogue stated, “I became very ill and was looking for an alternative medication for my illness, so I realized then that I needed to create Apothecary(TM) Genetics to provide an alternative treatment solution in the early 90s. Through my world travels, I have been able to find ‘land race strains’ and breed them with hybrids to create World Class medical cannabis.”

Bret and Apothecary went on to become the first American-based seed company to win the coveted Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam in 2007, and has won many other international and national awards for his medical cannabis developments. Having over 20 years of experience creating unique medical strains of cannabis, such as Grape Ape aka GDP, Kaia Kush, Sour Grapes, Old School Jams, and Goo, just to name a few, has put Bret and Apothecary Genetics on the world map as one of the top leaders in medical cannabis development.

Mr. Bogue concludes with, ” I was able to cure my melanoma by using medical cannabis in combination with standard radiation treatment. I am the living proof that medical cannabis kills cancer cells.”

As well, Bret is embarking on some exciting new projects such as a documentary with television giant A&E. Two pilots have already been filmed and sent to New York for review and approvals. The documentary will show real patients who are having real, positive results with medical cannabis. These patients include seniors from a senior citizens’ community in California. Viewers will see the reality of the medication’s benefits, as well as the emotions that come into play when someone is chronically ill. [Market Watch]

The real “Weed Wars” is between reality television networks, apparently. While all of these reality shows are well produced and informative, they’re certainly a bit repetitive. And a bit cheesy at times. Hopefully A&E has some aspect of the show that will differentiate it from its competitors. I suppose these networks bank themselves on people seeing the words marijuana or weed in the info section and saying “hell yeah, I’ll watch people smoke weed while I smoke” or something along those lines.

It’s certainly understandable that multiple networks are latching themselves onto the plant for reality series. Reality shows are cheap(er) to produce than original programming like Weeds. The bottom line is that marijuana is a hot topic du jour and we live in a capitalistic society, for better or worse.

Yes, activists and other parties most likely frown at the executives behind these shows, viewing them as people cashing in on the plant. But that’s the nature of the beast that is marijuana–it’s become an industry as well as a plant. Plus, the more shows there are about
